In this province of Prachuap Khirikhan cities like Hua Hin and Pranburi attracti tourism a lot leaving the official capital, named Prachuap Khirikhan city, a quiet and wonderful destination. The facilities in combination with the beaches, friendly people, view points, caves, mountains and forests make this place a really worth visit.
The Prachuap Khirikhan city
The small town is good “walkable”, it has wide streets with not much traffic. With a map of TAT it is easy to find the most attractions. There are Songtaews available with fixed rates to different places, also renting bicycles or an automatic moped is recommended. In the center of town you will find a number of small cafés and shops. The main attraction in the city center is the large and extensive City Pillar with a temple and shrine, in which exotic Lopburi-style paintings can be admired.
The landmark of the city: The Mirror Mountain
In English it is called Mirror Mountain and in Thai with Khao Chong Krajok. This is the mountain at the foot of the town with a beautiful view over the three bays. The mountain, with a temple top, is known for its many monkeys, who greet you at the foot and accompany you on the long staircase with 400 steps up. The Chong Krajok Mountain is also called the Mirror Mountain because there is a hole in the mountain giving you a unique view of the sky. At the top of the mountain there is a small but interesting temple, Wat Thammikaram, containing a number of Buddha relics. From this top you probably also experience one of the most beautiful views in your life.
The Prachuap Khiri Khan Bay is close and easy to reach, ideal for coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in one of the good fish restaurants with dishes at very attractive prices.
Ao Noi Bay
A beautiful place to visit from Prachuap Khirikhan city is Grand Noi temple with beautiful murals and the Khan Ka Dai temple in a cave, famous for its statue of a reclining Buddha. The climb is easy and the beautiful view of the sea is an incentive to climb higher and higher. The larger caves are impressive with, among others, Sleeping Buddha and many smaller Buddha statues. Also the stalactites and the light in light and dark spaces are a feast for the eyes.
Ao Manao Bay
You do not have to travel further to look up the beautiful white beaches and the translucent shallow blue water because Ao Manao has it! So named because it has the shape of a manao (= lime). This bay is part of a Thai air base in a place where Thai and Japanese armies fought during the Second World War. It has a museum to commemorate this. In the bay are also tourist facilities, such as the umbrellas with food, shower and toilets and various shops and restaurants. It can be quite busy here on weekends.
Besides the various nice restaurants, the market on the sea and the shops in the town, there are also large supermarkets. There is a Tesco Lotus, Mark Foodland and HomePro. These large chains are located on the main highway to the south, but can also be reached via the back with access via normal streets.
Prachuap Khirikhan city is an ‘unknown’ destination that deserves to be visited more, so we invite you to discover this pearl. You should be content with modest accommodation, because luxury hotels are missing as well as an exuberant nightlife. Just a short 300 kilometers from Bangkok to the south there are excellent connections by train and bus.
