ID:3658

I think you need to be really into history. I did not find this very exciting at all... There is a market under the... bridge on the back side and things are likely cheaper there then at the main market/tourist area. I hear the museum near by is also not that great/over priced. There are others - maybe check them out instead. Definitely go to the temples south of here over the water. No big into temples, but they are cool. Dragon and big Buddha.read more

A must visit if you come to Kanchanaburi. Its nice to walk over the bridge, especially when the train is coming. You... have small balconies added to the bridge so you can avoid being ran over by the train. But don't worry, the train passes slowly and it's impossible to miss its loud horn.We had a lunch at the floating restaurant next to the bridge, it offers a nice perspective and view of the bridge and the food is okay.read more

When i first saw the cinematic recreation, little did i know that more than fifty years later the actual location would... be extant. A similar melancholy accompanies visits to Ann Frank's sanctuary in Amsterdam and/or the likes of Flanders Fields. Only by remembering will atrocious behaviour visited on fellow humans ever leave this planet... there is hope!read more

Interesting place to visit to learn about the history of the Thai-Burma railway. You can also cross the bridge by foot.... Many food options incl. floating restaurants on the river. On weekends it can be extremely crowded on the bridge, as it is a famous place for Thai to go.read more

I have for many years wanted to visit this bridge. It is an amazing sight very poignant and thought provoking. It's... happy and sad all mixed together. There's alot of information about it on the wall. You can walk the full length of the bridge but trains still pass through only a couple a day. There's a market selling a variety of products until late. There are good cafes and restaurants by the riverside.read more

You are able to walk all over the bridge, just get off to the side when the trains comes! Shops and stores around the... east side of the bridge. On the new spans you can see the ID plates from the Tokyo bridge works, the angled trusses were rebuilt after the war, they were bombed. the curved trusses are the original ones put up by the POW's and indigenous workers. very cool! The history is much different than the movie if you weren't aware.read more

Well worth the visit. All very surreal now with markets and loads of tourists to think of what happened in the pass.... The part replaced after bombing, proves how up and personal everything is. It not like the movie or watching something on TVread more

Really enjoyable place and definitely worth to visit. You start your journey across the bridge and find a little market... to the right side. On the other side there is a temple with a lot of nice motives. Also there you will find a small landing area for the river. Excellent place to take a shot when the train passes by. It goes very slowly to give the people on the bridge the chance to secure themselves in the small waiting aisles aside.read more

Just been to the war museums and cemetery. There had been a celebration the previous day that we missed. But the... Japanese imperial rising sun flag fluttering from the bridge towers?...really?...c'mon now...!! There are that many stalls and glittery shops along with restaurants etc that to me, it has become a bit of a disneyesque showground. Let you make your own summations though.read more

Historical place which has a sad past costing nearly 1,05,000 lives to build this engineering marvel during World War 2... period. It's a hard hitting reality that I felt slightly low when I visited this bridge. But it was beautifully lit for a program organised for this weekend. To walk over the bridge was a thrilling experience!read more

Best part is walking across and getting a view of the river. Other than that and the historical significance it just an... old iron bridge. Even having seen pictures of it previously I guess I expected more out of the experience than I got. Maybe the 2.5km walk there in the blazing heat had me a bit out of it. Still glad I made the trip out from Bangkok for it though.read more

Such an interesting place to explore. You can walk right along the train tracks (and if you time it right can stand on... the side as the train goes by). Lots of brilliant photo opportunities and interesting history. You probably need about an hour to walk the length of the bridge and back and take photos (it's quite slow going as it is quite narrow and packed with tourists). If you have the time, worth booking a ride on the train. You can also visit the nearby museum to hear more about its history.read more

Interesting history, nice view of the river and a chance to see a train from a very short distance, moving very slowly... (a great attraction for kids). The market next to it (mainly jewelry, but the regular stuff as well) is worth a visit as well.Bottom line - a nice place to stop for an hour or so if you are in the neighborhood.read more
